渡口比昨天热闹得多。等船的人排成长队，推车的，挑担的，拖家带口的，吵吵嚷嚷。三个官差站在渡口前，挨个检查路引，盘问去向。
其中一个官差特别仔细，每张路引都要看很久，还要打量人脸。
萧执拉着沈明珠排在队伍最后面。
沈明珠的手心全是汗。她能感觉到自己的心跳，咚咚咚，像擂鼓。她偷偷瞄了一眼萧执，他面色平静，但下颌绷得很紧。
队伍慢慢往前挪。
前面有个挑着担子的农夫被拦下了。
“路引。”官差说。
农夫哆哆嗦嗦地掏出路引。官差看了看，又盯着农夫的脸看。
“去哪儿？”
“去、去江州卖菜……”
“一个人？”
“是、是……”
官差把路引扔回去：“过去吧。”
农夫如蒙大赦，赶紧挑着担子上了船。
下一个是个书生打扮的年轻人。官差看了看他的路引，又看了看他的脸。
“读书人？”
“是，学生去江州府试……”
“一个人？”
“是。”
官差摆摆手：“过去。”
终于轮到他们了。
沈明珠的心提到了嗓子眼。她能感觉到萧执握着她的手，很用力，他的手心也是湿的。
“路引。”官差头也不抬。
萧执从怀里掏出那两张旧路引，递过去。
官差接过，看了看，又抬头打量他们。他的目光在萧执脸上停留了很久，眉头微微皱起。
“叫什么名字？”
“林大。”萧执说，“这是我媳妇，林沈氏。”
“去哪儿？”
“去江州投亲。我表兄在江州做买卖，让我们过去帮忙。”"
