周寡妇死了男人，但烙饼的手艺还在，好悬养活了儿女。
日子稍微好一点点，老家又遭了旱灾，赤地千里。
朝廷拨了赈灾的银子，可灾民们连根银子毛都没看见。
实在是没有活路了，周寡妇和还是半大小子的儿子商议了一下三个人以后的活路。
儿子去投军，混口饭吃，母亲和妹妹则拿着兵饷当路费，去京城继续支个摊子。
一家人就此天各一方。
周寡妇那个儿子能耐得很，投军让谢家军看上了，每个月往家里寄不少军饷。
周寡妇烙油饼又别出心裁，舍得下料，名声打出去，日子就一天天地好起来了。
她人也勤快，白天挑着担子出门卖饼，入了夜就接一些替贵人婢女和家丁缝缝补补、洗洗涮涮的活，给女儿小银攒嫁妆钱。
但天有不测风云。
先是边关那边传来消息，谢家军在赤峰与胡虏对战，全军覆没了。
这其中，也包括周寡妇的儿子。
说来也怪，说是阵亡，一不见抚恤银子，二不见骨灰罐子……
刘三婶不知内情，奇怪地喃喃道。
